ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Hass avocado growers in the Mediterranean fruit fly quarantine areas of Fallbrook and Escondido no longer have to treat their fruit with pesticide before moving it from their groves.
Studies show Medflies can’t penetrate Hass avocado skin.
But avocado growers will still need state agriculture permission to harvest their fruit, won’t be allowed to harvest any fallen fruit and they will be required to cover avocados when they are transported to packing houses.
